Prologue

Where Do We Begin?

From the earliest layers of Văn Lang civilization, from the ancient citadel of Cổ Loa, from rivers that witnessed the victories of a people defending their homeland, through historic declarations of independence and the Autumn of Independence in 1945…

Vietnam has traveled a long road.

Today, that current continues to flow — through culture, knowledge, innovation, international integration and the aspiration to build a prosperous and resilient Vietnam by 2045.

This is not merely a story about the past.

It is the story of a nation continuing to write its own future.

Chapter 01

Văn Lang — The Beginning of a Nation

Long before the modern map of Vietnam took shape, communities were already forming a shared cultural space along the great rivers of northern mainland Southeast Asia.

Ancient Vietnam and Văn Lang civilization

From rice cultivation and bronze casting to village life, rituals and traditions, the civilization associated with Văn Lang laid important foundations for Vietnamese cultural identity.

The story of Vietnam begins not simply with the establishment of a state. It begins with the formation of a community — a community that learned to live with rivers, cultivate the land, create cultural symbols and pass memories from one generation to the next.

A civilization becomes lasting when its people know how to preserve what defines them.

Chapter 02

Âu Lạc and Cổ Loa — The Fortress of Innovation

The emergence of Âu Lạc marked another important chapter in early Vietnamese civilization. At the heart of that story stands Cổ Loa, one of the most remarkable ancient citadels in Vietnam.

Cổ Loa ancient citadel

Its massive defensive structure reflects not only military thinking, but also organization, engineering and the ability to mobilize collective resources.

Cổ Loa is more than an archaeological site. It is a reminder that the Vietnamese tradition of building, adapting and defending itself has deep roots.

Chapter 03

More Than a Thousand Years of Preserving Identity

History brought Vietnam into a long period of domination and cultural pressure. Yet political subjugation did not erase cultural identity.

Vietnamese cultural heritage

Language, customs, village traditions, beliefs, literature and collective memory continued to be preserved and transformed across generations.

Vietnam absorbed influences from the outside world while maintaining a distinct cultural identity. That ability to absorb, adapt and remain itself would become one of the defining characteristics of the Vietnamese experience.

Chapter 04

Bạch Đằng — The Return of Independence

The victories on the Bạch Đằng River became powerful symbols of Vietnam's struggle for independence.

Bạch Đằng River historical battlefield

Independence was not simply a political concept. It was a determination of a people to shape its own destiny.

Chapter 05

Nam Quốc Sơn Hà — A Voice of Sovereignty

The famous declaration traditionally associated with Lý Thường Kiệt became one of the most powerful symbols of Vietnamese sovereignty.

“Nam quốc sơn hà Nam đế cư.”

Vietnam was not merely a geographical space. It was a nation with its own territory, authority and destiny.

Across the centuries, the idea of sovereignty would continue to evolve, but its fundamental spirit remained: the right of a nation to determine its future.

Chapter 06

Bình Ngô Đại Cáo — A Declaration of Đại Việt

Centuries later, Nguyễn Trãi articulated a broader vision of national identity in the Bình Ngô Đại Cáo.

Nguyễn Trãi and Vietnamese history

Independence was connected not only with territory and political authority, but also with culture, history, institutions and the dignity of the people.

A nation is defined by more than borders. It is defined by its civilization, its people, its culture, its historical consciousness and its determination to protect its independence.

Chapter 07

The Declaration of Independence — 1945

On September 2, 1945, President Hồ Chí Minh read the Declaration of Independence in Ba Đình Square in Hanoi.

Ba Dinh Square 1945

A historic moment transformed centuries of aspiration into a new political reality.

Chapter 08

Vietnam and the Journey of Đổi Mới

In 1986, Vietnam embarked on the path of Đổi Mới — Renovation.

Vietnam economic transformation

Economic reforms gradually opened new opportunities for development, trade and international cooperation.

Đổi Mới became a bridge: from reconstruction to development, from isolation to integration, from aspiration to opportunity.

Chapter 09

Vietnam in an Era of International Integration

Vietnam's journey into the international community has expanded dramatically.

Vietnam international integration

Vietnam enters the world not by leaving its roots behind, but by carrying those roots forward.

Chapter 10

Culture — The Soft Power of a Nation

Culture is one of Vietnam's greatest sources of soft power.

Vietnamese culture and heritage
01

Heritage

Ancient traditions, historic sites and living cultural practices connect Vietnam's past with the present.

02

Cuisine

Vietnamese cuisine has become one of the country's most recognizable cultural bridges to the world.

03

Creativity

A new generation is transforming Vietnamese cultural identity through contemporary creativity.

Culture gives a nation a voice beyond its borders.

Chapter 11

Vietnam in the Digital and AI Era

A new chapter is emerging. Digital transformation, artificial intelligence, semiconductor technology and innovation are reshaping Vietnam's development trajectory.

Vietnam in the digital and AI era

The challenge is no longer only how to preserve the achievements of the past. It is how to transform them into the foundations of tomorrow.

Chapter 12

The Aspiration for 2045

Vietnam's vision toward 2045 represents a long-term national aspiration: a prosperous country, a developed economy, a modern society and a confident nation participating actively in the global community.

2045

A future still waiting to be written.

The road to 2045 will require innovation, education, science and technology, institutional reform and sustainable development.

The energy of a new generation will be essential. Every long journey begins with a first step. And Vietnam has already begun.

Chapter 13

Vietnam Through the Eyes of the World

How does the world see Vietnam? As a country of ancient traditions and rapid transformation. As a nation with a young population, dynamic cities, diverse landscapes and a distinctive culture.

The image of Vietnam is created not only by statistics, but by human encounters.

A traveler discovering a new landscape. A student studying abroad. A researcher working with Vietnamese colleagues.

An entrepreneur building a partnership. A foreign friend discovering Vietnamese food, music and everyday life.

Chapter 14

Vietnam — A New Generation Writes the Future

Every generation inherits a country. But every generation also has the responsibility to transform it.

Young Vietnamese generation

Young Vietnamese people study across borders, work with global partners, build digital businesses, create new technologies and tell Vietnamese stories through new media.

Their Vietnam is connected, confident and increasingly outward-looking. The future will not simply happen to them. They will help create it.

Epilogue

Where Did We Begin?

From a civilization beside rivers.

From generations that protected their land, language, customs and collective memory.

From struggles fought so that people could live in peace.

From independence.

From Đổi Mới.

And today, from a Vietnam stepping into the world with knowledge, confidence and ambition.

A nation can go far when it knows where it began.

But Vietnam's journey does not end there.

To know where we began is to understand who we are.
To understand who we are is to know where we want to go.

The current of the past flows through the present.

And from this present, a new generation of Vietnamese people is writing the future.

From heritage — toward the future.
From Vietnam — toward the world.

The Vietnamese current never stops flowing.
